China rejects Canadian sanctions

Beijing, Sep 3 (Prensa Latina) The Chinese Ministry of Commerce rejected Canada's "discriminatory stance" on imports from China.

Spokesman for the Ministry Lin Jian also announced that Beijing intends to resort to the dispute settlement mechanism of the World Trade Organization to solve this situation with Ottawa. “China will initiate an “anti-discrimination investigation” into the sanctions adopted by Canada, in accordance with the provisions of Article 7 and Article 36 of the Foreign Trade Law of the People’s Republic of China, and take corresponding measures against Canada focusing on the real situation,” he added.

Moreover, the Ministry of Commerce assured that rapeseed exports from Canada increased significantly and amounted to $3.47 billion in 2023, with a year-on-year increase of 170 percent in volume and a continuous decrease in price, which made China suspect dumping, while Chinese domestic rapeseed industries suffered losses.

“China will initiate an anti-dumping investigation on imports of rapeseed from Canada in compliance with relevant domestic laws and regulations and WTO rules in consistency with the law,” the Ministry of Commerce said.

The spokesman also announced an anti-dumping investigation into chemicals coming from Canada.

Recently, the Chinese Foreign Ministry described Canada’s announcement to impose tariffs at a rate of 100 percent on electric vehicles from China as protectionist.

Spokesman Lin Jian urged Ottawa to respect objective facts, comply with WTO rules and immediately correct its “erroneous practices.” He also called not to politicize economic and trade problems, while announcing countermeasures to defend the legitimate rights of China’s companies.
