Over 400 forest fires in a week in Ecuador

Quito, Sep 2 (Prensa Latina) In one week 458 forest fires have been reported in 19 provinces of Ecuador, a situation that worries today the authorities of the Andean country, which has allocated funds to combat these fires.

The most affected provinces are Pichincha, Cotopaxi, El Oro, Azuay, Carchi, Imbabura, Chimborazo, Guayas and Loja.

The biggest in recent days is still active in the canton of Quilanga, in the southern province of Loja, where the flames have already consumed more than 4,600 hectares, there are several injured people and damage to vegetation, homes and private property.

There, the emergency has not been fully controlled for more than a week and teams from the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Air Forces are working together to fight the flames, while at the Catamayo Airport they established a joint command post to coordinate the arrival of aid from the neighboring country.

In this capital there are also fire outbreaks in several points, while the Quito Environment Secretariat informed that the air quality this Saturday was within normal parameters, after detecting significant concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and aerosols yesterday.

Since January to date there have been 1,994 forest fires registered in 19 provinces, and have caused the loss of 18,332 hectares of vegetation cover and more than 20,000 animals have died.
