Efforts are underway to provide children with this vaccine, but what the territory’s inhabitants need most is a cease-fire, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in Palestine (Unrwa) said on X.
The entity did not specify whether the figure represents all the children vaccinated on the first day or only those who received the dose from their work teams. The process continued this Monday under the bombs after new Israeli attacks, which caused dozens of deaths and injuries, according to the official news agency Wafa.
On the same social network, Unrwa yesterday called on the parties to the conflict to respect the lives of civilians and humanitarian teams participating in the initiative.
It is a race against time to reach just over 600,000 minors in that territory, Unrwa commissioner general Philippe Lazzarini said.
“For this to work, the parties to the conflict must respect the temporary pauses in the areas. A lasting ceasefire is necessary for the sake of children throughout the region,” he stressed.
The United Nations Children’s Fund made a similar statement, noting that the campaign will benefit some 640,000 minors. jrr/jav/jf/rob
