According to a press release from the National Border Service (Senafront), the discovery is the result of Operation Arcángel Miguel and is a receiving center for illegal travelers to the United States who are guided by coyotes from the Caribbean coast.
The director of Senafront, Jorge Gobea, explained to the press that this path on the banks of a river in a community of the original Emberá region is denied to undocumented migrants and only the humanitarian migratory corridor connecting Cañas Blancas with Bajo Chiquito is authorized.
For Gobea, after the transit of the travelers, what follows is devastation and contamination of the waters. He said that the communities have left their regular activities to exercise a type of “commerce” that involves attention to migrants, but at present this type of activity is illegal.
At the site, improvised stores with products such as clothing, dry food, footwear, personal cleaning products, among other items, were seized.
During the operation, seven Starlink satellite antennas were seized, technology that was presumably used to facilitate illegal activities in the area.
