Torrential rains help spread cholera epidemic in Sudan

torrential-rains-help-spread-cholera-epidemic-in-sudan
Khartoum, Aug 30 (Prensa Latina) The inclemency of the brutal downpours that have lashed for weeks the east of Sudan contribute to spread the cholera epidemic that today adds eight deaths to the 128 new infected, according to figures from health sources.

Informants link the spread of the epidemic to the rains and the consequent contamination of water for human consumption and the proliferation of mosquito infestations that transmit other infectious diseases such as malaria, dengue fever and yellow fever.

The size of the epidemic can be estimated by the number of infected people in the state of Kassala (east) alone, 700, 10% of whom are isolated in a hospital.

Meanwhile, the Civil Defense put the death toll caused by the floods and the collapse of the Arbaat dam in the Red Sea state (northeast) at 30, in addition to an undetermined number of missing persons, destruction of houses and farms and the loss of a large number of livestock.

The rapid spread of the disease further aggravates the crisis in this African country, the scene of a civil war caused by the power struggle between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan, president of the Sovereign Transitional Council, and the paramilitary chief Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
