Search will start to identify missing persons in Colombian cemetery

Bogotá, Aug 30 (Prensa Latina) A search task force will seek to identify missing persons by unearthing evidence in the Albornoz Cemetery in Colombia’s northern Cartagena town, said today the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP).

According to the source, the process will rely on testimonies, the analysis of DNA samples from relatives and bodies, and the forensic search in the necropolis proper.

According to documentation disclosed by the JEP and the Search Unit for Persons Reported Missing (UBPD), there are bodies that require analysis to determine whether they were victims of the armed conflict raging in the country for decades.

Joint efforts among the parties that form the project will be key to contrast this information, recover and identify the bodies, and deliver them with dignity to their families, the JEP statement said.

The search for more than 111 thousand people reported missing as part of the armed conflict is one of the most important challenges the country faces to relieve the suffering of the missing people’s relatives and move forwards with reconciliation, said the document.
