Guatemala registers 29 tremors in the last 24 hours

Guatemala City, Aug 30 (Prensa Latina) The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh) reported today Guatemala felt 29 tremors in the last 24 hours.

The tremors had magnitudes between 2.4 and 4.9 on the Richter scale, Insivumeh indicated through a bulletin of the Department of Research and Geophysical Services.

One of the most perceptible occurred at 01:43 local time, the day before with magnitude 4.9 and epicentral region in the Pacific Ocean, while the other at 05:17 of the same day, of 4.2, in the same area.

The rest of the movements, in their majority, originated in the same point, although they also took place in the coastal regions of the western department of Retalhuleu, Mexico and El Salvador, as well as in San Marcos.

From January to date we have registered 2,528 seismic events, of which 56 were felt, Insuvimeh also informed.

The country felt the 6.3 magnitude tremor in the Pacific coast of El Salvador last Wednesday and since then there have been more than 48 aftershocks with magnitudes between 2.6 and 4.8 degrees.

Victor Tzorin, expert of the Seismological Service of Guatemala of the Mariano Galvez University, explained that they called the attention because until this August there were very few tremors that surpassed the threshold of 6.0 degrees.
