Mahamat expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the attack perpetrated by the so-called Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wa al-Muslimeen, JNIM, in Arabic) in the north-central commune of Barsalogho on August 24. The Group is linked to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.
The chairperson underscored the urgency of concerted action to fight the rise in terrorist crimes in the Sahel countries and reiterated the continental organization’s solidarity with the people and government of Burkina Faso in the circumstances they are experiencing.
At least 200 persons were killed, and 100 others were injured due to the attack launched by the extremist group against citizens that were digging trenches around the city to protect it from assaults.
