Honduras ends extradition treaty with the US

Tegucigalpa, Aug 29 (Prensa Latina) The Foreign Minister of Honduras, Enrique Reina, reported that the Government terminated the extradition treaty with the United States in compliance with an indication from President Xiomara Castro.

Reina pointed out that the end of the treaty was carried out based on the constitutional powers of the Executive branch based on “maintaining the peace and internal security of the Republic and repelling any foreign attack or aggression”, and directing the policy to international relations.

“I do believe that this is a message to say well let’s continue working together, but let’s agree on mutual respect for our states and our common interests and let’s respect the decisions we make as countries and let’s not try to interfere or manipulate situations that they consider are not the right ones”, Reina expressed.

The minister noted that Honduras expects a change of attitude on the part of the United States. “We have mentioned them at all levels, our ambassador in Washington, at my level, President Xiomara Castro has done so at other levels, and we do not see a change in attitude, so let’s hope for a change,” he emphasized.

The announcement came after President Xiomara Castro ordered Reina to denounce the extradition treaty with the United States, after US Ambassador Laura Dogu expressed US concern over a recent meeting between Honduran and Venezuelan defense authorities.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the United States may have its visions about any country, its visions about Venezuela, “but I think they should respect us, just as they respect other nations, the United States ambassadors do not go around fighting with countries everywhere,” he stressed.

On Thursday, the Honduran president mentioned on X Washington’s interference, interventionism and intention to direct Honduran policy through its embassy and other representatives, actions that she described as intolerable.

The president wrote that the US attacks, ignores and violates with impunity the principles and practices of international law, which promote respect for the sovereignty and self-determination of peoples, non-intervention and universal peace.
