Tractors and equipment to open ditches (trenchers) are part of the machinery, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), said in a press release.
The machinery, it explained, has as its main purpose to improve the efficiency and sustainability of agricultural production, in the face of the challenges inherent to climate change.
It will also allow farmers to optimize soil management, improve land drainage and increase productivity in adverse weather conditions in the territories of Los Arabos, Matanzas (west); Quemado de Güines, Santo Domingo and Corralillo in Villa Clara (center) and Jobabo, Amancio and Colombia in the province of Las Tunas (east).
The supply of equipment responds to “Climate Resilience in Agricultural Ecosystems in Cuba” (IRES) project, which includes the productive restoration of lands invaded by marabú in seven Cuban municipalities affected by drought, low rainfall and soil degradation.
The ongoing work, FAO highlighted, includes the introduction of forestry, agri-forestry and silvopastoral systems that included the planting of forest species, fruit trees, forage, pastures, various crops and shade trees, with a view to promoting food production and contributing to food security.
Implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, IRES “underlines the commitment of the Cuban Government and FAO to promote sustainable agricultural practices to drive the transformation towards more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agri-food systems,” the source said.
It is about increasing the national availability of food, achieving “better nutrition, a better environment and a better life without leaving anyone behind,” the United Nations agancy stressed.
Collaboration between Cuba and FAO is essential to achieve food security and rural development in the context of changing climate.
