Colombian boxer Muñoz is happy to return to Cuba

Havana, Aug 28 (Prensa Latina) Although he did not end up with a victory, Colombian boxer José Ignacio Muñoz leaves Cuba happy, after participating in the International Boxing Association (IBA) Champions’ Night on Tuesday.

Muñoz fought against Erislandy Alvarez, Cuba’s Olympic champion in the 63.5-kilogram division in Paris 2024, to whom he lost by unanimous vote, but that does not stop his enthusiasm at all in his second visit to Cuba.

I think we fought well against an incumbent Olympic champion. He (Alvarez) has a great future. They called me five days ago, but we are always prepared there in the city of Barranquilla, giving it all in our training, he commented.

In an exclusive interview with Prensa Latina, Muñoz explained that he usually does not fight six rounds like he did on Tuesday, but eight, and that he lost three months of training due to an injury he had and this was his first fight this year.

Of Venezuelan origin, Muñoz also had words of praise for Cuban professor Gerardo Deroncelet, who was one of his pillars to start boxing when he lived in Caracas.

Regarding his immediate plans, he said that he will focus on getting stronger and continuing to train to fight again in two and a half months.

Muñoz has 20 professional fights under his belt, 16 wins and four defeats, including Tuesday’s fight, and the other defeats were also against recognized rivals, like Armenia’s Hovhannes Bachkov, Olympic bronze medalist in Tokyo 2020.

Here I felt great, welcomed by the Cuban team and I want to thank them for everything, he concluded with a smile, because despite not coming out on top in the ring, he leaves strengthened by the experience and the warmth of the fans in Havana’s emblematic Ciudad Deportiva (Sports City).
