Among the groups that support the protest are the Meeting of Retirees and Neighborhood Assemblies, the Frente Grande, Independientes and the State Workers Association.
The organizers invited the General Confederation of Labor and other union and social entities to join the protest.
“The increase that the government opposes is very small, it is 17 thousand pesos (around 17 dollars) which does not solve the problems we have. However, we must prevent it from being vetoed,” said Marcos Wolman, member of the Coordinating Table of Retirees and Pensioners Organizations.
“The Government is defunding the pension system. Its plan is to privatize and establish a model that failed in the 1990s,” added Wolman, who recalled that a campaign to collect signatures against the Executive’s policies is ongoing.
“The increase in unemployment and informal work also defunds the system because the number of wage earners who contribute decreases. All this is happening while the minimum retirement covers barely a third of the poverty basket,” he said.
Recently, Milei confirmed that he will veto a new retirement mobility law, approved by the Senate, which provides that the minimum retirement should not be less than the value of a basic basket for the elderly, and that the formula cannot be tied only to the Consumer Price Index, but has to consider salaries.
