Homicide rate in El Salvador is lower than a year ago

San Salvador, Aug 27 (Prensa Latina) El Salvador reported a homicide rate between 2 and 2.1 per 100,000 inhabitants, a reduction compared to 2023, Justice and Security Minister Gustavo Villatoro said.

Villatoro told national television that the country has managed to maintain control of security, previously in the hands of a “parallel criminal State” represented by the gangs that had a monopoly on homicides and drug sales. We have defeated them, he pointed out.

The minister indicated that the most important thing is that six million Salvadorans acknowledge the success of the security policy.

The report states that homicides in El Salvador underwent a 68.9-percent decrease, with 154 murders in 2023, down from 495 in 2022.
