Good Dominican school turnout amid unexpected snags

Santo Domingo, Aug 27 (Prensa Latina) The Dominican Ministry of Education (MINERD) reported Tuesday that the new school year has set off with an average attendance of 83 percent of students and 97 percent of teachers, although sources from that sector reported minor hitches.

The return to classes was preceded by a reiterated calls on families to send their offspring back to classrooms starting last Monday.

According to Ancell Scheker, Deputy Minister of Technical and Pedagogical Affairs of the MINERD, some schools will start teaching in the next two weeks, as they underwent deep renovations, which were impossible to complete in schedule, while other new ones are yet to be completed.

According to Diario Libre, Scheker did not specify the exact number of facilities so affected, but spoke of dozens, and said that in some cases virtual classes will be offered.

The Ministry of Education published on Tuesday that the beginning of the school year was preceded by an organizational work, which included the distribution of 12 million books, the delivery of furniture, uniforms and school supplies.
