Dominican Gov’t to promote advertising campaign against violence

Santo Domingo, Aug 28 (Prensa Latina) The Dominican Minister of the Interior and Police, Faride Raful, announced the beginning of an advertising campaign to promote a culture of peace and confront violence nationwide, mainly caused by social conflicts.

Raful, who assumed the post a week ago to replace Jesús Vásquez, explained that in order to achieve its effectiveness, the integration of institutions and all social stockholders will be necessary.

She highlighted the importance “of territorial intervention with churches, families, neighborhood associations, schools, as well as the Ministries of Education and Sports.”

The official added that the measure was approved because investigations pointed to the lack of peaceful coexistence as the trigger for the attacks in more than 60 percent of the cases.

During Monday’s meeting with the Joint Task Force at the National Police Palace, in the follow-up to the Citizen Security Plan, it was revealed that between August 1 and 16, 55 homicides were reported, and 65.5 percent were women.

Likewise, 19.9 percent are linked to crime, 9.1 percent to illegal actions and 14.5 percent are under investigation.

In the first seven months of 2024, 716 murder cases had been reported, compared to 769 in the same period last year, according to data on the National Police’s website and the Citizen Security Data Analysis Center (Cadseci).
