Cuban science contributes to agri-food development

Camagüey, Cuba, Aug 27 (Prensa Latina) For Cuban agriculture, scientific work is essential for its development, and with this intention, research is encouraged at the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) in Camagüey.

In an exclusive interview with Prensa Latina, Nemecio González, director of the institution that recently celebrated its 35th anniversary, referred to the achievements made in the production of medicines for animals in a territory that can boast being the one with the highest livestock in Cuba.

“For example, we have a project against rabbit hemorrhagic disease in the advanced technological development phase,” the scientist said.

“We should be finishing the year with products, with batches produced to carry out clinical trials and be able to register the product,” he said about this medicine that complements Gavac and ProVac, the latter against hog cholera.

These lines of products characterize the CIGB international marketing, in a portfolio that also includes HeberNem.

“We are also working on a project for a new candidate for the control of ticks, so that it has a broader spectrum, not only against the specific bovine tick, but also against ticks that affect pets, horses, and other species,” González noted.

In agriculte, he mentioned a project to improve the quality of coffee

“Work is being done on the isolation and standardization of the coffee fermentation process that can improve the properties of both the flavor and aroma of coffee and therefore give a higher added value to our Cuban coffee, which in itself is something that has a reference in the world,” he added.

Regarding Cuba’s agri-food sector, this type of contribution continues to be crucial for its own development, especially in times of obstacles imposed by the United States blockade. However, groups such as the CIGB in Camagüey continue to focus on the idea of making Cuba a future of people of science.
