The agenda will extend until August 29th, and the review of progress in the implementation of bilateral agreements is expected after the San Francisco Summit between the presidents of both countries.
According to China, one of the issues on the table will be the position regarding Taiwan and strategic security. Beijing will particularly stress that Washington must adhere to the “one China” principle and fulfill its promise not to support Taiwan independence. In addition, it will demand that the US stop the politicization of economic and commercial affairs, as well as unilateral measures that harm national interests.
As explained by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Beijing will refute the United States’ accusations about the alleged threat to the international order that China represents.
Wang Yi and Jake Sullivan previously held three rounds of strategic dialogue in Vienna, Malta and Bangkok, but this is the first time in eight years that a US National Security Advisor has traveled to China.
Since the summit between Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping in San Francisco, China and the United States established more than 20 dialogue mechanisms and the two sides have maintained communication between foreign affairs, finance, law enforcement and climate change teams, as well as the two armed forces.
However, Beijing has repeatedly accused Washington of continuing with its intentions to contain and repress China, thus the risks to the bilateral relationship continue rising.
Some analysts believe that due to the growing “trust deficit” between the two nations and the end of Biden’s term, Sullivan’s visit at this time is of little value. However, others believe that the meeting with Wang Yi will be an extensive and strategic one, as well as an important opportunity for the two sides to exchange point of views.
