Islamist attack in Burkina Faso leaves hundreds dead

Ouagadougou, Aug 26 (Prensa Latina) A new Islamist attack in the Burkinabe city of Barsalogho, in the center north of the country, left hundreds of people dead, in a number still to be determined, it was announced here.

According to the authorities, the action, carried out this weekend, caused a massacre of civilians and members of the security forces.

The attack was claimed by the so-called Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM, Arabic), linked to the Al Qaeda terrorist network.

The Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sana, confirmed that there are mumerous fatalities among civilians as well as security forces and militiamen fighting against these terrorist organizations.

Burkina Faso military authorities recently announced the creation of a joint security force with Niger and Mali to combat extremist violence in their respective countries.

The three nations share borders in the Sahel region and are affected by similar conflicts, especially in the fight against the violence of Islamist groups, which has left a high number of deaths and displaced people for two decades.
