The initiative, with a total investment of 250 million lempiras (more than 10 million 71 thousand US dollars), is promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, and also seeks to improve the quality of life of small and medium coffee growers, Channel 8 television reported.
The coffee producers in Honduras who benefit from this program launched by President Xiomara Castro, are located in 226 municipalities of the 15 of the country’s coffee producing departments.
The head of Agriculture, Laura Suazo, said that with this initiative they are fulfilling the Government’s promise to support coffee growers to be more competitive in the international market and manage to market Honduran coffee, which generates significant income to the national economy.
It was learned that the coffee bonus here not only includes the delivery of fertilizers, but also training and technical assistance components, which help to improve agricultural practices and add value to production.
Honduras is among the largest coffee producers in the Central American region, and according to official figures, coffee accounts for more than five percent of gross domestic product (GDP) and close to 30 percent of the country’s agricultural GDP.
