Ecuador’s leftist groups seek unity ahead of polls

Quito, Aug 26 (Prensa Latina) Leftist movements and parties in Ecuador are seeking some middle ground that helps them face the 2025 presidental polls with some sense of unity.

Presidential candidate from RETO movement, Eduardo Sánchez, assured Radio Pichincha on Monday that the process seeking unity among his group, Pachakutik and the Citizen Revolution (RC) is moving forwards.

In his words, there are other similar organizations such as the Socialist Party and the Democratic Center attending talks, but agreements seem closer with Pachakutik and the RC. According to Sánchez, it is due time for the RC to elect a presidential candidate and for Pachakutik to pick the head of deputies to the National Assembly.

So far, eight of the politicians aspiring to the presidency of Ecuador have already officially accepted their candidacies for 2025, an previous essential step to participate in the polls, as part of a process that is still open for the other remaining nine.

So far, parties that have completed proceedings include the RC movement, represented by the Luisa González and Diego Borja duo, Partido Sociedad Patriótica (PSP), with Andrea González and Galo Moncayo; and the Partido Socialista Ecuatoriano (PSE), with Pedro Granja and Verónica Silva.

Same goes to Avanza, Acción Movilizadora Independiente Generating Opportunities (Amigo), Democracia Sí, Creando Oportunidades (CREO) and Renovación Total (RETO) movements.

On February 9, 2025, more than 13 million Ecuadorians are expected to elect the country’s president, vice president, 151 legislators, and five Andean parliamentarians.
