Costa Rica plans to bring electrify to all by 2030

San Jose, Aug 26 (Prensa Latina) Costa Rican authorities aim at achieving full electrification of the country by 2030, a senior official told local Extra newspaper on Monday.

Meeting this goal is one of the great debts of the solidarity model of energy generation, which for decades fell short of bringing the service to 100 percent of the population, added Marco Acuña, CEO of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE).

There are still some 10,000 houses inhabited by 30,000 people without this service, it poses a great challenge, we estimate that the investment needed to bring electricity to all these people is around 60 billion colones (some US$114.3 million), recalled the CEO, quoted by Extra.

Acuña mulled that electricity gives access to opportunities, to key elements for personal, social and cultural improvement, and also to issues, such as health and others. Our goal is to bring the service to all people so that they can develop for the benefit of society.

In reference to the social sector that suffers the greatest exclusion from the service, the CEO said “we have already started to electrify their territories through several projects and a millionaire investment on generation, transmission and distribution of energy to these communities during the next three years.”
