Syria highlights struggle of late Palestinian leader

Damascus, Aug 24 (Prensa Latina) Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Al-Mekdad offered his condolences today for the death of the fighter and leader of the Palestinian Fatah movement, Farouq Al-Qaddoumi, who died in Amman, the capital of Syria, at the age of 93.

In a telephone conversation with the ambassador of the State of Palestine in Syria, Samir Al-Rifai, the foreign minister praised Al-Qaddoumi’s long struggle and his legacy that represented the aspirations of the Palestinian people to free themselves from the yoke of Israeli occupation.

During his tenure in the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), the deceased played an important role in mobilizing all revolutionary forces and combining his capabilities with Arab and international forces in favor of the just struggle of his people, said the head of Syrian diplomacy.

He also stressed the late leader’s faith in the strategy of the Palestinian-Syrian relationship to fulfill the tasks of the struggle against the Israeli occupation of Arab lands.

This loss is for all Arab peoples who have defended the just Palestinian cause, he said.

The Fatah movement mourned on Thursday the death of Palestinian leader Farouq Al-Qaddoumi, the member of the Central Committee of the organization and former member of the Executive Committee of the PLO, after a long illness.

According to the Fatah statement, with his death the organization lost a great national figure and a fighter for the rights of the Palestinian people, including return, self-determination, freedom and independence.

Fatah highlighted Al-Qaddoumi’s career and leadership in the Palestinian struggle and recalled his participation in important milestones of the resistance. ef/rgh/fm
