Presidents of Panama and Costa Rica will hold official talks

Panama City, Aug 23 (Prensa Latina) The president of Panama, José Raúl Mulino, and his Costa Rican partner, Rodrigo Chaves, will hold conversations focused on irregular migration.

According to the agenda, the leaders will first hold a private meeting and after an expanded one, which will have the participation of several authorities.

Chaves and the delegation accompanying him were received upon arrival in Panama by the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Carlos Ruiz-Hernández. They also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Martínez-Acha

Although Chaves pointed out that all the issues to be discussed this Friday with Mulino are important, several analysts considered that the issue of controls on the growing migratory flows from South America to the United States stands out, in which Panama and Costa Rica are transit nations.

A government statement published on Thursday states that the leaders will address immigration issues, binational security and the economic-commercial sphere.

Mulino confirmed to journalists that irregular migration and strengthening security in bordering areas will be central to his conversations with Chaves. “We will address issues of common interest in terms of trade, agriculture and border security, especially in Paso Canoas, which is very accessible, and where we plan to build facilities that reinforce the work done there by Customs and the National Border Service, among other institutions,” he said.
