Argentine organizations denounce neglect of vulnerable sectors

Buenos Aires, Aug 23 (Prensa Latina) The Piquetero Fighting Front and cooks from soup kitchens will participate in a protest in front of the Ministry of Human Capital to denounce the policies of the Argentine government and the abandonment of vulnerable sectors.

Under the motto “100 pots against hunger,” the protesters will demand the delivery of resources to the institutions that serve the people most affected by the serious socioeconomic situation.

The Somos Barrios de Pie movement convened a similar initiative last week. “In Javier Milei’s Argentina, seven out of 10 families stopped eating once a day. Furthermore, according to data from the United Nations Children’s Fund, one million children go to sleep without dinner,” the organization stressed on X. “The violence that this government exercises on our people is unacceptable. We are going for the Food Emergency Law,” it added.

According to a study by the Social Debt Observatory of the Catholic University, 54.9 percent of the population of the country is poor, and the indigence index reached to 20.3, which is the highest levels in the last 20 years, showing that one in five people does not even reach the minimum income to be able to live.

The period analyzed is the first quarter of this year, which was marked by the application of a strong adjustment, the devaluation of the Argentine peso, economic deregulation, the fall in production and economic activity, massive layoffs and the destruction of the State, among other measures dictated by Milei.

The Observatory indicated that the percentage of people in an emergency situation grew almost 10 points compared to the fourth quarter of 2023, when the number of poor people stood at 45.2 percent and indigence at 14.6.
