WHO warns of dengue fever rise in Latin America

Geneva, Aug 22 (Prensa Latina) The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a substantial increase in dengue fever cases in Latin America and the spread of diseases transmitted by mosquito bites.

The multilateral organization pointed out that such insects transmit several viral diseases and are one of the most deadly animals in the world.

WHO stated that one of the contagions of concern is dengue fever, with 12 million cases reported in 80 countries. However, Latin America is the global region that has seen a drastic increase.

Data from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) show that in the first half of 2024, the region exceeded the highest number of contagions in a year since records began.

The countries with the highest number of contagions in Latin America, at the end of May, are Brazil, followed by Argentina, Paraguay, and Peru.

The UN health agency recalled that mosquitoes can transmit diseases such as chikungunya, dengue fever, lymphatic filariasis, Japanese encephalitis, malaria, Rift Valley fever, yellow fever, and Zika.
