Dr. Miriam Teresita Llanes, head of the Forecasting Center of that scientific institution, told Granma newspaper that for the rest of the season, 15 tropical storms are expected to form throughout that geographic area, of which nine could reach hurricane category.
Of the total number of tropical storms, 12 should develop in the Atlantic oceanic zone and three in the Caribbean Sea, she said.
The probabilities that at least one hurricane will originate and intensify in the Caribbean, and that one of Atlantic origin will penetrate the Caribbean, continue to be very high, with 85 and 70%, respectively.
The expert pointed out that the probability of Cuba being affected by at least one hurricane is 80%, and in the case of at least one tropical storm, this possibility reaches 90%.
Llanes emphasized that the oceanic and atmospheric conditions over the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea remain favorable for the emergence and development of tropical cyclones.
