Chances for peace in Middle East are wearing thin, UN warns

United Nations, Aug 22 (Prensa Latina) The Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, said Thursday that possibilities of defusing the crisis brewing in the region are wearing thin, which aggravates the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Speaking at the Security Council, Wennesland indicated that several factors are combining to trigger an explosive situation, ranging from the human tragedy Gaza is living through to the serious risk of regional escalation and the lack of progress from negotiations.

“We must resort to all efforts to mitigate human suffering in the region,” the representative remarked as he insisted on the need for an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza.

He further called for diplomatic measures for de-escalation and irreversible steps towards re-establishing a political framework to end the conflict and establish a two-State solution.

“If any of these remain unaddressed, the prospects for a more stable, peaceful and secure region will remain elusive,” he alerted.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian representative to the UN Riyad Mansour urged the Council members to visit the Strip and witness the horrors faced by civilians trapped in over 10 months of hostilities.

The diplomat spurred to press for a truce and work urgently to stop the genocide and crimes being perpetrated.

“The time for waiting is over,” Mansour said as he recalled resolutions emanating from the security body for an immediate ceasefire and the protection of all civilians.

The Israeli offensive, following Hamas attacks on its territory on October 7, has left over 40,000 deaths and more than 1.9 million Palestinians displaced because of constant evacuation orders.
