Argentine Senate special session after salary scandal

Buenos Aires, Aug 22 (Prensa Latina) The Argentine Senate will host a special session to reverse an increase in legislators' allowances, which sparked strong criticism and disagreements within the Government.

This week it became known that the monthly income of the members of the upper house of Congress would exceed eight million pesos (more than eight thousand dollars) despite the strong adjustment implemented by the government of Javier Milei, the serious socioeconomic crisis and the increase of poverty.

The leader of Argentina Humana, Juan Grabois, considered this a theft. “If it’s not embarrassing to charge that amount in the name of “freedom” or social justice while 1.5 million kids go to sleep without eating, we’re crazy. That doesn’t even happen in Europe, and they don’t have a 55 percent of poor people. It is undignified,” he said. “Between the freedom to starve to death from the impoverishing Government and the dissociation with the reality of the never-adjusted caste, we are going straight to national dissolution. Milei, don’t play dumb because your party presides over both Chambers of Congress,” he added.

After the scandal, Argentine vice president and head of the Senate Victoria Villarruel convened a session for 10:00, local time, and reported that it will be a face-to-face and public debate.

The announcement was made after the heads of the Senate blocs notified their decision to vote to reverse the increase.

According to the Página 12 newspaper, the event worsened the contradictions between Villarruel and Milei, who described the increase in payments to legislators as a betrayal.
