Uruguay to join Chinese lunar project

Montevideo, Aug 21 (Prensa Latina) Uruguay is looking towards the Moon and wants to join research on that satellite, with doors opened by a memorandum of understanding with China.

It is a document between the University of the Republic (UDELAR) and the Deep Space Exploration Laboratory of the National Space Agency of China.

The cooperation agreement between both institutions will allow teachers and students from UDELAR to participate in the development of the project that plans to install the International Lunar Research Station (IRLS) on the lunar surface by 2049.

The station will be complemented by another in orbit, which should be ready by 2035, according to La Diaria.

The memorandum states that the lunar station “will provide both parties with an open, flexible and mutually beneficial international cooperation platform for their participation in the research and development of lunar science and technology”.

It is a comprehensive scientific experimentation facility proposed by China and jointly built by many countries, operating autonomously on the lunar surface and orbit for a long period of time, with short-term human participation, and is scalable and maintainable, the text details.

The document adds that it will carry out “large-scale, multi-objective, multidisciplinary scientific and technological activities, such as exploration and scientific research, exploitation and utilization of resources, and verification of frontier technologies”.
