India-Brazil maritime sector ties make progress

Colombo, Aug 21 (Prensa Latina) India and Brazil continue to advance ties in the maritime sector with the presence here of Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen, commander of the Navy of the South American nation, the Ministry of Defense informed.

Sampaio’s visit to India until next Saturday is aimed at improving cooperation between the two countries, showing the common commitment in this sector and collaborating in the face of shared security challenges, the military entity indicated.

The Brazilian admiral spoke this Wednesday with his Indian counterpart, Dinesh K Tripathi, chief of the Naval General Staff, about operational commitments, technical cooperation and training, the source said.

As part of his official engagements, the visitor is scheduled to meet with the Secretary of Defense, the National Maritime Security Coordinator and the Vice Chief of Army Staff in Delhi.

Sampaio Olsen will also tour the Indian Ocean Region Information Fusion Center in Gurugram and hold interaction with various defense industry representatives. He will go to Mumbai, where he will meet the Commander-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, tour indigenous warships and submarines, the Naval Dockyard, and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited.

The Indian and Brazilian navies collaborate through various initiatives, including operational and training interactions, according to the official source.

They also interact in multilateral forums such as the India-Brazil-South Africa Maritime and bilateral defense cooperation between the two countries is carried out through the Joint Committee headed by the respective sector ministries.
