University Federation of Argentina begins 48-hour strike

Buenos Aires, Aug 20 (Prensa Latina) The National Federation of University Teachers, Researchers and Historical Creators begins a 48-hour strike to demand a salary adjustment and denounce measures taken by the Argentine government that are detrimental to the sector.

The organization specified that the action will continue to address the plan of the Union Front of National Universities, which was strengthened after the worsening of the situation in higher education centers due to the policies of President Javier Milei.

On the other hand, the Federation rejected the approval in the Chamber of Deputies of a norm that declares education as an “essential service” considering it was formulated to prevent workers from exercising their right to protest.

“Given the refusal of the Ministry of Human Capital to open a true joint discussion and the persistent imposition of ridiculous increases, it became essential to continue making the situation visible and deepen unity with the university community as a whole,” says a statement from the organization, which also confirmed the decision to hold another march in defense of the public university in September.

The workers also demand the restitution of the Teacher Incentive Fund, the elimination of the income tax and the updating of pensions.

Recently, the Front carried out a 72-hour strike that included a rally in front of Congress to express its rejection of the Executive’s intention to prohibit social protest and initiate, the privatization of the Argentine educational system, in addition to condemning the interruption of programs for the delivery of books and computers, the interruption of sending resources to school cafeterias and the hault of infrastructure works, among other measures dictated by Milei.
