Study reveals export opportunities between Ethiopia and India

Addis Ababa, Aug 20 (Prensa Latina) A market study released by the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture and the Indian Embassy here on Monday revealed export opportunities and how to address challenges to improve trade bilateral countries.

The report addressed the conditions for overseas sales of oilseeds, pulses, cotton, precious stones and coffee from Addis Ababa to New Delhi to understand the current conditions and boost the sector.

In that regard, Ethiopian Minister of Agriculture Girma Amente commented that the research represents an important milestone in the ongoing partnership to improve bilateral trade and explore new avenues of economic growth between the two countries.

Amente explained that in 2022, bilateral trade reached the impressive figure of 2.8 billion dollars, which marks a solid and expanding partnership. However, exports to India, which totaled 80 million dollars, indicate substantial room for growth, he stressed.

He stressed that the study provides a comprehensive analysis of Ethiopia’s production and export landscape for the aforementioned key commodities, in addition to the ongoing macroeconomic reforms in an effort to foster the country’s business environment.

“Our recently reformed agricultural policies aim to improve productivity, strengthen value chains and expand market access for farmers and producers,” he added.

Indian Ambassador to Ethiopia Anil Kumar, in turn, commented that the report underlines the shared commitment to foster stronger economic ties and mutual cooperation between the two countries.

“With the growing demand for high-quality agricultural products from India and Ethiopia’s rich agricultural sector, there is a natural synergy that can be harnessed for the benefit of both countries,” he pointed out.

Kumar noted that the study also provides a detailed analysis of market trends, regulatory frameworks and logistical aspects. It serves as a valuable resource for stakeholders in both countries, including policymakers, he noted.

The ambassador reiterated that India’s Embassy is committed to promoting and facilitating increased bilateral trade.
