On his X profile, the head of State noted that López’s fifth Olympic gold medal in Paris 2024 turned him into one of the legends of that sports event.
In his message, Díaz-Canel praised “the dedication, dignity and commitment of the true athlete, proud of the four-letter (Cuba) team shirt.”
With his victory on August 6 in Paris, López became the best wrestler in history, winning gold medals in five consecutive Olympic Games in an individual discipline (130 kg Greco-Roman wrestling).
He had previously won the titles in Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
