Mexico registers a decrease in homicides compared to 2018

Mexico City, Aug 20 (Prensa Latina) Mexico registered an 18 percent decrease in intentional homicides in July compared to December 2018, the beginning of the current administration, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection Rosa Icela Rodríguez reported today.

During a presentation at the usual press conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the minister asserted that the daily average of victims of this crime fell two percent compared to 2023; nine percent compared to 2022, 15 percent with 2021, and 17 percent compared to 2020 and 2019.

According to the information released, six territories concentrate 44.4 percent of intentional homicides in the country.

In the case of the state of Guanajuato, four more were reported than in June; In Baja California, 14 more; in the State of Mexico, 19 less; in Chihuahua, 46 less; in Jalisco, 10 more, and in Guerrero, 11 less. With regard to the 50 priority municipalities, Rodríguez said that the number of these crimes decreased by 18.3 percent compared to December 2018.

The secretary also referred to the 29.5 percent decrease in total theft compared to the beginning of the current six-year term; 48.6 percent in vehicle theft; 77 percent in kidnappings; 94.2 percent in hydrocarbon theft and 37.6 percent in feminicide.

“We continue with the actions of prevention, prosecution and attention to feminicidal violence. It must be said that we have continued working with the women’s institutes of the states, as well as with the state prosecutors so that there is no impunity,” she emphasized.

Regarding federal crimes, Rodriguez highlighted a reduction of 24.8 percent compared to six years ago.
