Mexican president describes judiciary as a kidnapped power

Mexico, Aug 20 (Prensa Latina) President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Tuesday described the judiciary as a kidnapped power at the service of a minority, and considered that the majority of Mexicans do not care about the strike announced by that sector.

“The judicial power is a power taken, kidnapped, at the service of a rapacious minority, of a mafia not only of organized crime, a mafia fundamentally of the potentates,” the president said at the National Palace during his regular morning press conference.

According to the head of State, “just as before (business people and leaders) had their deputies and senators in the legislative power and now this is not the case, because the majority are representatives of the people, they want to continue to have their representatives in the judicial power.”

“(…) now that those in the judiciary have decided to go on strike, the majority of Mexicans are not going to care,” López Obrador said, in reference to the strike announced by the National Association of Circuit Magistrates and District Judges of the Judicial Branch to begin on Wednesday, due to a reform promoted by the Executive.

According to the government, the reform seeks to end corruption and influence peddling that permeates that autonomous power and that has made possible the release of criminals, a complaint in which the majority of citizens agree, according to surveys.
