Man sentenced for disappearing peace signers in Colombia

Bogota, Aug 20 (Prensa Latina) A man was sentenced to 34 years in prison for the disappearance of five peace signers in 2017 in Nariño, southwestern Colombia, according to information available today on the Attorney General's website.

The evidence presented by a prosecutor from the Special Investigation Unit was decisive for a judge to find Jorge García, alleged middle manager of the criminal structure Los de Vaca or Resistencias Unidas Campesinas, responsible for the crimes of forced disappearance and aggravated conspiracy to commit crimes.

The events occurred on October 14, 2017 in the Isupí area, in El Charco (Nariño), when the victims were detained by armed men who accused them of failing to comply with orders given by this criminal network in the area.

According to the source, the investigation determined that the signatories were tied by the hands and taken down a river, after which nothing more was known about them.

The Prosecutor’s Office also reported that another defendant, named Ferney Cuaspur, through a pre-agreement, accepted his responsibility in a separate case for the crimes of attempted aggravated homicide and manufacturing, trafficking and carrying restricted weapons and ammunition for the exclusive use of the armed forces.

Cuaspur participated in the attempted murder of peace signer Leidy Pasu in an incident that occurred on November 16, 2023, in Mocoa, in the south of the country.

According to the source, the defendant shot the signer who, after the attack, was transferred to a health center where her life was saved.

A specialized criminal judge in Mocoa endorsed the judicial negotiation and sentenced him to nine years and one month in prison.
