Chile’s homicide rate recorded slight decrease in 2023

Santiago de Chile, Aug 20 (Prensa Latina) The Chilean Prosecutor's Office presented Tuesday the report on homicides perpetrated here in 2023, which shows a slight downward trend compared to blood-related crimes committed in 2022.

According to data, the period registered 3,670 cases, 74 percent of which were unsuccessful attempts on life, while 36 percent left 1,247 dead.

The Prosecutor’s Office underscored that a rate of 6.3 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants translates into a slight decrease, as compared to the 6.7 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants reported in 2022, considered to be the year with the highest historical rates.

In terms of geographical distribution, 14 districts of the Metropolitan Region, where the capital is located, concentrate 18 percent of the victims, headed by Santiago Centro, with 66, Puente Alto (35) and San Bernardo (34).

Most of the crime victims were aged between 30 and 49 years, with 79 out of every 100 being males, the document states.

The Prosecutor’s Office indicated that out of total number of crime victims in 2023, 1,047 were Chilean nationals and 200 foreigners.
