Chile celebrates the 246th anniversary of Bernardo O’Higgins’ birth

Santiago de Chile, Aug 20 (Prensa Latina) The 246th anniversary of the birth of Liberator Bernardo O'Higgins will be remembered today with a ceremony in the commune of Chillan Viejo, where he was born, considered one of the fathers of the Chilean homeland.

More than 1,200 people are exdpected to participate in the traditional parade in the esplanade of the park that bears his name and will be led by President Gabriel Boric, together with the Minister of Defense, Maya Fernandez, and the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Toha, among other authorities.

The Chilean military and political figure played a crucial role in the process of emancipation from Spanish colonialism.

In Mendoza, O’Higgins organized together with Jose de San Martin the liberating army of the Andes and led the offensive against the royalist forces, which led to Chile’s independence in 1818 after the battle of Maipu.

Subsequently, he assumed as supreme director, the highest authority of the Republic, and as such signed the Political Constitution of 1822.

Among the works of his government are the construction of primary schools, the reopening of the National Institute, the National Library and the creation of the Military School and the Academy of Young Marine Guards, which is currently the Naval School.

The schedule of activities for his birthday began on Sunday with a mass in San Bernardo parish and continued on Monday with the traditional tribute at the Aucas Club.

On Thursday a talk is scheduled at the Casa de la Cultura by historians Marcial Pedrero and Marco Aurelio Reyes, which will cover various aspects of the life and work of the independence hero.
