Carrefour and Greisser, places in Haiti with danger, death and pain

Port-au-Prince, Aug 19 (Prensa Latina) Carrefour remains today a place in Haiti where danger, fear of death, the pain of families and the blood of innocents spilled is a constant.

From January to July of this year, 66 people died or disappeared, among them 15 women and four members of the Haitian National Police.

A report by the National Network for the Defense of Human Rights reported that 46 women and girls were victims of gang rapes during the same period.

Local media reported that dozens of citizens were injured and hundreds of houses were looted or vandalized.

The gangs in Haiti maintain their reign intact, and the police together with Kenyan troops are still unable to exterminate them from their fiefdoms in Carrefour, Gressier, Ganthier and 80 percent of this capital.

The population of Carrefour is at the mercy of the criminal groups that control this municipality, and even forced law enforcement officers to leave their police stations.

It is now normal to see the armed bandits everywhere, they have control of everything, since the state structures are almost nonexistent. They have their dynamics well conceived, they stand guard daily, they know who is at home and who went out, and at what time the inhabitants return to their homes.

The gang members have established their own tax system, which is why business owners pay their contribution on the weekend according to the size of their establishment.

It is advisable to pay it, otherwise they loot and set fire to the property, even their physical integrity is in danger.

So far Le Nouvelliste newspaper could not verify if the more formal businesses, such as gas stations, commercial banks, money transfer offices, operate according to the mood of the criminal groups planted in Carrefour.

The National Police never attempted to carry out an operation to regain control of its precinct, much less to protect and care for a population in danger, the newspaper noted.

In the absence of law enforcement agents, the gang members in their vans and wielding automatic weapons make rounds and search passers-by and vehicles on the streets.

Earlier, the criminals carried out a manhunt for police officers, and many had to leave Carrefour to save their lives.
