First case of polio in Gaza, while the UN prepares vaccinations

Ramallah, Aug 17 (Prensa Latina) Gaza authorities announced the first case of polio in the territory, amid a UN campaign to reach a temporary cease-fire to start a round of vaccination.

The Health Ministry explained in a statement that a 10-month-old baby from the city of Deir Al-Balad tested positive for the virus.

It noted that a vaccination round aimed at children, under 10 years of age, will begin in the coming days.

For this purpose, 1.2 million doses of polio vaccine type 2 were distributed in coordination with the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), it said.

The portfolio stressed that the Israeli aggression against the Strip caused an unprecedented health catastrophe, which in turn caused the spread of viruses and various diseases due to the lack of medicines, water, sanitary services and the accumulation of waste in the streets.

Precisely, the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, called yesterday for humanitarian pauses in the conflict to initiate a polio immunization campaign for more than 640,000 children in the enclave.
