During the upcoming national elections on October 27th, a constitutional plebiscite on night raids will be held, just as insecurity is the greatest citizens’ concern.

This explains why 65 percent of the population would support the idea, according to a survey by the Opción consulting firm.

Several presidential candidates have expressed their support. Some of them propose employing the Armed Forces in combating crime.

Among those opposing the issue is the Single Union of Police of Uruguay, which expressed that the conditions for carrying out nighttime raids are inadequate.

Union delegate Ricardo González said that guarantees should be given to agents, especially in terms of security, and supported the presence of the police “everywhere,” but described the confrontation with criminal gangs as complex.

“It’s just that crime’s power in armament, especially that of drug traffickers who are operating, is very great,” the union rep said, and stressed that the “position of our union has already been transmitted; our union is against this.”

González noted that the police union has not been consulted on the issue, although he said they will invite the presidential candidates to learn about the position of law enforcement officers.
