University movement announces 48-hour strike in Argentina

Buenos Aires, Aug 16 (Prensa Latina) Argentina’s National Federation of Research Teachers and University Creators announced on Friday a 48-hour strike from August 20 through 21, to demand pay raises and to denounce the measures adopted by the Argentinian Government.

As detailed by organizers, the strike would add to a plan of action by the National Universities Union Front, initiated after the Argentinian president, Javier Milei issued a series of decrees that translated into a worsening situation for higher education institutions.

The Federation also rejected the passing of a bill at the Chamber of Deputies, who declared education as an “essential service”, thus hindering any attempts by the sector workers to exercise their right to protest.

In view of the refusal by the Ministry of Human Capital to open a truly effective Joint Advisory Committee and the continuous issuance of inadequate wages, it becomes critical to raise our voices and strengthen the unity of the university community, the organization highlighted.

Accordingly, the Federation reiterated its decision to stage another protest in defense of the public university in September.

Likewise, workers demand the resumption of the Teaching Incentive Fund, the elimination of income tax and the updating of pensions.

This week, the Front went on a 72-hour strike, which included a rally in front of the Congress, to reject the President’s intention to prohibit social protest and privatize the educational system in Argentina.

The group also condemned the disruption of programs for the delivery of books and computers, the suspension of the flow of resources to school canteens and freezing infrastructure works, among other measures taken by Javier Milei’s administration.
