Addressing the audience that gathered at the main hall of the National Theater, for a sworn-in ceremony that included Abinader’s Vice President Raquel Peña, who will accompany him till 2028, the reelected leader thanked the people for the confidence bestowed upon him.

He went on to recall his inauguration chronologically coincides with the 168th anniversary of the onset of the two-year war against Spain, the Restoration of the Republic, in which founding fathers helped to build up Dominican identity.

Abinader reiterated his willingness to forward to Parliament next Monday the bill to prevent any president to hold more than two terms in office.

In his words, the constitutional reform he is promoting these days will predate other changes, such as the Labor Reform, with the purpose of updating the regulatory framework of labor, and the strengthening of social protection and a Fiscal Reform to guarantee healthy public finances, the attrition of the debt and to ensure resources for healthcare system.

Abinader noted that in the past four years, unnecessary government spending has been substantially reduced. He announced that he will restructure the State by merging or eliminating unnecessary institutions and taking cost containment measures, in order to ensure the responsible use of public resources.

He likewise reaffirmed his commitment to cracking down on crime, and investing in the health and education sectors. The official act was attended by leaders and senior authorities from 87 nations and 21 international organizations, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
