The Department of Culture and Tourism of the Municipality coordinated a cultural program, in which renowned local and international artists performed to celebrate the date showcasing a colorful diversity of cultural expressions.
On Thursday morning, the “Asuncion Mother of Cities” parade kicked off celebrations, not only as it does every year, but it also paid homage to the fluvial port, which has been the starting point for expeditions since colonial times, so the port fostered the birth of other cities, such as Buenos Aires, Corrientes and Santa Fe in Argentina; and Santa Cruz de la Sierra in Bolivia.
Founded as “Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion” (Our Madam of Asuncion) on August 15, 1537, it is the capital and most populated city of Paraguay, which is located in the center-west of the eastern region.
Music, theater, folklore, dance, visits to historical museums and activities for children are part of the program to commemorate one of the oldest cities in South America.
