Panama Canal operates at maximum draft of vessels

Panama City, Aug 15 (Prensa Latina) After 110 years of operations, the Panama Canal operates from today at its maximum draft (50 feet or 15.24 meters) the transit of vessels through the neopanamax locks.

Following the gradual improvement of fresh water levels in its artificial reservoirs after the severe water crisis of 2023, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) further indicated that as of September 1, vessel crossings through the inter-oceanic waterway will amount to 36 daily.

Currently, 35 vessels transit daily, 25 of them through the old locks and 10 through the expansion built in 2016, which allows the passage of ships with up to three times the cargo of the original panamax.

Panamanians celebrated on Thursday the 110 years of operation of the Canal, its main economic asset, inaugurated on August 15, 1914 with the crossing of the Ancon Steamship.

The Panama Canal, which connects over 1,900 ports in 170 countries, accounts for 6 percent of the world’s maritime trade and its biggest users are the United States, China, Japan and South Korea.
