According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the agenda responds to an invitation from President Xi Jinping.

To Lam was elected as the new general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam earlier this month following the death of Nguyen Phu Trong, after which Xi sent him a congratulatory message expressing his willingness to work together to guide the construction of a community of shared future.

The Chinese leader also advocated jointly consolidating political trust and deepening strategic exchanges and substantive cooperation in order to bring more benefits to the two peoples and actively contribute to the peace and progress of humanity.

“China and Vietnam are friendly socialist neighbors connected by mountains and rivers”, Xi noted in the letter, recalling that during his visit to Hanoi in 2023, the construction of a community of shared future with strategic importance was announced, which opened a new chapter in the links between the Communist Parties of China and Vietnam, as well as between the two countries.

Upon his appointment as president of Vietnam, Lam stressed that he would work to maintain the essential lines of foreign policy characterized by the defense of national interests, by being a good friend to all and a responsible member of the international community, and by Vietnam’s traditional vocation to be a country that loves and defends peace.
