Ethiopia has no cases of Mpox, but declares national health emergency

Addis Ababa, Aug 14 (Prensa Latina) The Ethiopian Ministry of Health announced today there are no confirmed cases of Mpox in the country so far, but declared the disease a national public health emergency.

The statement from the Ministry of State responds to the official declaration of the current outbreak of the infection as a Continental Public Health Security Emergency by the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In the face of this health crisis, the text emphasized that a collaborative effort by all African countries is imperative to prevent the spread of the disease.

In Ethiopia, the Ministry of Health revealed that it is currently carrying out control and inspection operations in the city of Moyale, a border town with Kenya, and other entry points such as Bole International Airport in this capital.

Likewise, together with the Public Health Institute and other relevant authorities, they are closely monitoring the epidemiological situation. Mpox, a disease caused by the monkeypox virus, has common symptoms including a rash or mucosal lesions lasting two to four weeks, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, lack of energy, and swollen lymph nodes.

It is transmitted to humans through physical contact with an infected person, contaminated materials, or animals carrying the infection.
