Environmental projects resume in Afghanistan

Kabul, Aug 14 (Prensa Latina) The National Environmental Protection Agency reported that it made significant progress in resuming 10 projects in the fields of climate change and environmental protection in Afghanistan.

During the presentation of its annual report, agency officials detailed that the initiatives reach a total value of 58,7 million dollars.

According to the report, during the past year the entity signed five memorandums of understanding worth $1 million with non-governmental organizations for the implementation of environmental projects.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director of the National Environmental Protection Agency Zainul Abideen Abid called on the international community not to politicize the issue of climate change and to engage with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban government) on this issue.

Unfortunately, 32 climate change projects have been suspended by the international environmental financial mechanisms; after extensive efforts, seven projects worth $27,54 million were reinstated and three new projects worth $31,16 million were boosted, Abid said.

According to the agency’s own data, some 21 million people in Afghanistan do not have access to clean water due to climate change; 2,5 million people have been displaced from their main farming areas; and farmers suffer $250 million in damage to the agricultural sector annually.
