Angola reaffirms commitment to achieving Southern African goals

Luanda, Aug 14 (Prensa Latina) The Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs Téte António, reaffirmed Tuesday his country's commitment to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the goals the regional entity wishes to achieve.

In the Council of Ministers’s meeting in Harare, while summarizing Angola’s work in the rotating presidency of SADC, the FM highlighted the actions taken to respond to the slogan: “Human and Financial Capital: Key Factors for Sustainable Industrialization in the Region.”

In that regard, the minister underscored the launching of the SADC Transformation University, which will strengthen access to education, improve the quality and relevance of education to national priorities, and reinforce collaboration between higher education institutions.

According to a press release from the Angolan Foreign Ministry, António addressed the security challenges persisting in the region, such as the conflict in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where a military mission of the community was deployed at this stage.

The Angolan Government further supports Mozambique against terrorism and violent extremism in Cabo Delgado province, a mission officially closed on July 4, 2024.

“We are convinced that peace, security, and stability are the prerequisites for meeting our goals of a peaceful and integrated region,” the minister stressed.

Other issues discussed were the Regional Humanitarian Appeal of at least US$ 5.5 billion, launched at an extraordinary summit on May 20, 2024, to cover the needs of over 61 million people in the region, affected by climatic phenomena.

On Tuesday, Angola began the handover of the rotating presidency of SADC to Zimbabwe, who for a year, will be the head of the organization composed of 16 countries.
