A report in the newspaper La Pagina recalls that in November 2023, the president of the Republic, Nayib Bukele, together with the ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, Zhang Yanhui, announced the beginning of the construction works of the new National Stadium, which will be ready early in 2027.
According to official information, the facility is the result of the meeting between the Salvadoran head of state and the Chinese president, Xi Jinping in 2019, and this type of strategic projects contribute to the rapprochement and strengthening of ties between both peoples.
La Pagina states that personnel and machinery of the Ministry of Public Works are working on the dirt road in the area, where the Military School ‘Captain General Gerardo Barrios’ was located before, and that will soon begin the construction of our sports infrastructure.
We are talking about 50,000 spectators in seats, apart from 250 spaces for people in wheelchairs, VIP places, spaces for the press, which makes a total of more than 52,000 spaces,” said Bukele in 2023, when the first stone of the megaproject was symbolically laid.
Local authorities say this will be the most modern stadium in all of Latin America and the biggest in Central America.
It will be built over a period of three years and the investment exceeds US$100 million, which will be constructed with renewable materials and recycled energy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
